Sheesh, it's been a while since I wrote to this journal ... let's see if I start getting more regular at it.

ISP switching (Excite@Home switching to ATT Broadband) is sure fun ... yeah, right. Hopefully I can get my teaching web site back up tonight.

Nathan is the greatest ... I think it's time to scan some more pics in and add them to the family web site.

BTW, the web site for Requiem for a Dream (some of the soundtrack music plays on it): http://www.requiemforadream.com/

Another movie I've wanted to see - Memento. The web site (the spelling makes perfect sense if you know anything about the movie): http://www.otnemem.com

Watched Requiem for a Dream a few nights ago on DVD ... wow, beautiful, haunting, wonderful music. Also very depressing movie, so not one to watch when you're in an escapist mood. I enjoyed Traffic (we watched it about a month ago), but thought this movie was quite a bit better (Julie didn't like Traffic much at all). Ellen Burstyn (yeah, I'm sure I didn't spell her name right) definitely deserved an Oscar for her performance.

Kronos Quartet performed the music, very appropriate for the movie, and added to the overall feel, unlike some movie soundtracks. Which reminds of another soundtrack that I thought was extremely well done - Almost Famous. Somehow Cameron Crowe blended in the music better than just about every movie of that genre that I can remember ...

I really, really want to go see A.I. tonight, but doubt we can get (or afford) a babysitter at the moment. Kubrick being probably my all time favorite director piqued my interested, and it sounds like Spielberg (definitely another favorite director) did the job right, keeping enough of the Kubrick vision, while still making it his movie.

Ok, enough movie rambling for now ...

I'm thinking about using Too Soon Tomorrow from Metheny's Imaginary Day album for this Sunday's communion music. Nice chord changes, works well as a trio or quartet, not too hard to play.

Stuff I've Done Over the Last Month
It's been a little over a month since I was laid off at Locate Networks. I haven't done a lot of job-hunting yet, but need to - the bank balance is running low.

Many times I feel guilty or down on myself for not accomplishing more ... because it seems like I haven't done much. But when I think about it, that's poppycock. Even though I haven't done a whole lot of creative work, a lot of logistical stuff has finally been caught up (either because I had to, such as my system motherboard crapping out on me, or because I finally had some free time):

    1. I've got a completely rebuilt and basically new office computer system (my home theater computer was rebuilt last winter). I'm becoming more of an expert at building home computers than I ever thought I would be. This system should last me for a little bit: 933 mhz processor, 133mhz bus, 320MB SDRAM, 2 20 GB hard drives (I
like to back up between two physical hard drives), plus all of the other usual stuff - network card, graphics card, sound card, DVD ROM, laser printer, scanner, ZIP 250 drive, etc.

All of the computers network together, sharing a cable modem connection, hard disk space, laser printer, etc.

    2. My Web sites are re-written, re-organized, and improved with new utilities and information. I've created Web sites for Buddy and Julie, heh. URLs:

    http://www.codewrangler.net/
    http://cliffg.codewrangler.net/
    http://buddy.codewrangler.net/
    http://spikegreen.codewrangler.net/

    3. My utility and solution code has copyright notices, documentation frameworks (for Doxygen or Doc++ or the like), and better organizational structure. I think the BinaryBuf and BitBuffer utility classes are very industrial strength and useful for many situations.

    4. All of my Eudora e-mail archives, address lists, and related info has been moved over and converted into MS Outlook. I've moved over all of my Sidekick contact info to Outlook. This include ten years of e-mail and contact info. I've resisted the MS quagmire for many years, but too many apps like to live in a world of their instead of being able to share and interchange easily. I never want to go through another manual conversion again (same reason for registering my own domain name - I never want to change my e-mail or Web address again).

    5. My resume is updated, finally.

    6. I've spent wonderful family time with Nathan. It's worth every minute. And caught up with other friends and family.

    Antonia
I think we'll do Antonia for communion music this Sunday. It's simple enough that I can play it, won't require too much orchestration, and Tim and Dan could play the melody if they get a chance to practice it.

I set up a PunchNetworks WebGroup to share the MP3 files, which I think will work better than e-mailing them. Much better. :)

I think I'm going to take some time to really figure out what to do with my music hankerings. I wish I didn't have to work to pay the bills. Winning the Lotto would be nice.

    Metheny and Mays
I've been on a Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays kick lately, after buying the Pat Metheny songbook a few weeks ago. I'm listening to some ballads / slower pieces at the moment, trying to find something to use for church communion this week.

I love playing with Steve and Clipper - of course they are accomplished pros, and I'm just an amateur duffer. I'm trying to figure out what to do musically with my life, since I have enough talent and experience and background desire to do something more than I have to date.
